Seniors in Motion Program

Seniors in Motion Program
Posted on 08/28/2023

The Recreation Department of the Town of Kirkland Lake has received a small grant from the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility, through their Seniors Community Grant program. With these dollars, a program entitled Seniors in Motion, a concentrated 7-month effort, will offer programs and events to older adults, seniors, and multigenerational families.

The focus of our efforts will be to provide as many fitness, leisure, educational, skill-based, cultural and social programming as possible throughout the project, targeting new-to-our facility seniors and newcomers to our area. These programs will be tailored to the needs and desires of our aging population but may include land-based activities, aquatic activities, senior social swims, world chats, age-appropriate workshops, lessons/training and some outdoor programming. We plan to offer these programs in a variety of convenient locations throughout the municipality such as the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex, The Stope (home of the KL Multicultural Group), and Civic Park.

Our intention is to keep Seniors moving (thus 'in motion'). We have a population of 7750 according to the 2021 census with over 2,400 of those individuals being over the age of 55. We pride ourselves on being an age-friendly community but have not had the capacity or funding to offer complimentary programming to local seniors and newcomers. We believe that there is a large portion of seniors and newcomers who have not yet entered the Community Complex or utilized our facility (including our new rehabilitation/leisure pool built in 2018) and we want to reach and serve those individuals through this project.
