Building & Demo Permit Information

When is a building permit required?

For a deck, a building permit is required for any deck whose walking surface is more than 2 feet above the grade.

For a garage or shed, a building permit is required for any structure whose floor area is larger than 15 square metres (161 square feet).

For an addition to a house or existing building, a permit is required.

For a renovation to a house or existing building, a permit may be required depending on the scope of the proposed renovation. Reach out to the Building Division team for clarification on your specific project.

For adding an additional dwelling unit to an existing building, a permit is required.


What is required to get a building permit?

A building permit application consists of a completed application form, a set of construction drawings detailing how the proposed construction will be built, a site plan of your property showing where the new construction will be located, and a permit fee. Building permit fees are established by the Town's User Fees and Charges By-Law


When is a demolition permit required?

For a demolition, a permit is required to remove any structure, or part of a structure larger than 10 square metres (108 square feet).


What is required to get a demolition permit?

A demolition permit application consists of a completed application form, a site plan of your property showing which building or part of building will be demolished, and a permit fee. Demolition permit fees are established by the Town's User Fees and Charges By-Law
